Artists including Chin Injeti, Jim Byrnes, Dustin Bentall, Kendel Carson, and members of Odds are set to take part in a performance aimed at showcasing the talents of musicians with disabilities.

The Strong Sessions Live concert will take place at SFU Woodward’s in the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts on April 9, and will feature musicians from the Vancouver Adapted Music Society in collaboration with the more established performers.

Injeti, who dealt with polio as a child, says he benefited from similar organizations in Toronto.

“It’s amazing how they’re integrating these adults with disabilities, whatever kind of disability, and putting that disability part aside and concentrating on what they’re able to do, and the talent that these people have,” he told the Straight by phone.

The Vancouver Adapted Music Society offers programs including a community choir, jam sessions at the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and recording time in a wheelchair-accessible studio at the facility. The organization was co-founded in 1988 by Sam Sullivan and Dave Symington.

The Strong Sessions album, which was released in November 2013, featured collaborations between professional musicians and VAMS artists.

“It lets voices be heard that may not get heard, and it’s just strong for the soul,” said Injeti.
