Andrew Jackson Jihad at the Rickshaw

    1 of 1 2 of 1

As the band’s attention-grabbing—not to mention completely great—moniker hints at, Andrew Jackson Jihad doesn’t take the world as seriously as the famously humourless likes of Van Morrison, Sting, or (God rest his soul) Lou Reed.

Littered all over the Phoenix, Arizona–based alt-roots band’s latest, Christmas Island, are killer references to Stevie Wonder, Helen Keller, Linda Ronstadt, the Heaven’s Gate cult, and our lord and sweet saviour Jesus H. Christ. All this is delivered in a musical fashion reminiscent of the Flaming Lips before they lost the script after The Soft Bulletin. (Or, if you prefer, Tripping Daisy back when the ’90s were saturated with bands that understood quirky didn’t have to mean the Barenaked Ladies).

Catch Andrew Jackson Jihad—whose Christmas Island was one of last year’s best records—at the Rickshaw on Saturday (April 4). And don’t forget to wear your Temple Grandin T-shirt for maximum cool points.
