The Rentals at Electric Owl

Sometimes bands take a little break between albums. And sometimes they take a really, really long hiatus. From a fan’s perspective, sometimes the wait is worth it. (Hello, MBV!) And sometimes it isn’t. (Goodbye, Guns N’ Roses!) The Rentals took 15 years between records, which seems like just enough time for everyone to forget that the Rentals existed in the first place.

Led by former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp—who is cursed and/or blessed to have “former Weezer bassist” appended to his name forevermore—the Rentals put out a record called Lost in Alphaville last summer. Hailed as a sonic souvenir of the golden age of indie rock, the LP’s fuzz-buzzed guitars and retrograde synths added up to something that, while hardly a game changer, was still a hell of a lot more fun than anything Rivers Cuomo and company have released in the past, say, 15 years.

Catch Sharp and whoever is in his touring band (hey, the Internet doesn’t always have all the answers) when the Rentals play Electric Owl on Saturday (May 9).
