U2 play Rogers Arena

You weren’t alone in wondering how the hell U2’s Songs of Innocence ended up in your iTunes account last October. After all, let’s be honest, the last time you bought one of the band’s records was back in 1987. That’s assuming you were actually born when the pride of Ireland made the jump to superstar status with The Joshua Tree.

But flashing back to last October, in its ongoing quest to become the only band that matters, U2 created a shitstorm. Rather than having the world acquire Songs of Innocence in the traditional fashion—ripping it for free from the Pirate Bay—Bono and the boys made a deal with Apple whereby everyone with an iTunes account got the record for free. Most people were outraged that U2 would be so presumptuous to assume anyone needs a U2 record other than The Joshua Tree. And they were right.

But that’s not changing the fact that Bono and company are still packing stadiums and hockey rinks, which explains their shows Thursday and Friday (May 14 and 15) at Rogers Arena. Too bad they didn’t load two tickets to the show into your iTunes account, even though it probably would have caused an outrage.

The U2 bashing articles are really getting old, not to mention lazy. Writers for Georgia Straight, please grow up.

Was half the floor slanted for that picture? Larry Mullens' seems to be the only one who can stand up straight.
