Brian Wilson at the River Rock Show Theatre

Brian Wilson is coming to town. No, not the Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Fidel Castro beard. We’re talking about that other Brian Wilson. You know, the one without whom the Beach Boys are simply not the Beach Boys. (Sorry, Mike Love and Al Jardine.)

Speaking of Castro, the Beach Boys’ first album, Surfin’ Safari, came out in October 1962, which was the same month that the Cuban Missile Crisis went down. Coincidence? Well, yes. But if you’re the type of person who likes to make connections between seemingly unrelated things, consider that in the recent film Love & Mercy, Wilson was played by John Cusack. Cusack also starred in High Fidelity, in which his character has a copy of the Beach Boys’ 1967 LP Wild Honey hung up in a place of honour in his apartment.

What does it all mean? Probably not a goddamn thing, but it’s something to think about while you watch Brian Wilson (the Beach Boy, not the relief pitcher) perform at the River Rock Show Theatre on Friday (July 24).
