Lions in the Streets win custody of album masters

In 2005, local faves Lions in the Streets made an album for TVT Records and then parted from the label over a mixing dispute. When TVT folded in 2008, with its assets being purchased by music company the Orchard, the recording disappeared inside a legal limbo that everyone expected would last forever.

“Things moved on and we pretended that record didn’t exist,” Lions’ singer-guitarist Chris Kinnon told the Straight, “but then I approached them [the Orchard] recently, and said, ‘We’re interested in finishing this record.’ ”

Much to his surprise, the response from the company was “very gracious”. So gracious that the Orchard handed all the masters back to the band for free. “I don’t know if they would have been that easygoing to somebody’s masters that were worth something, like Pitbull,” said Kinnon, “but they were certainly very cool with us. It was refreshing.”

Meanwhile, the Canadian rights to the album belong to 604 Records, and Kinnon said the band is eager to work with the local label to wrap things up and finally get it released. You can check out the song “Ruthless” at Soundcloud for a taste of what to expect.

For some Lions, catch the band at its Peak Performance Project showcase at Fortune Sound Club on Thursday (October 10).
