Rykka wants to kick you outside

On Saturday (October 19), Rykka wants you to put away the personal device, turn off the TV, and go outside. She’s so serious about it that the hotly touted local songbird has actually organized a campaign around the idea called Nature Rocks (#NatureRocks13). But really—what’s so great about “outside”? “There’s some crazy quote on the David Suzuki website that North American children spend less than 30 minutes outside and more than seven hours in front of a screen every day. It’s so intense!” Rykka told the Straight, in a call from Morsbach, Germany, where she’s touring her recently released, Ryan Guldemond–produced album, Kodiak.

The record was written from the perspective of animals. “With the album I wanted to get people’s minds into nature,” she said. “And now I just wanna get people physically into nature.” There’s a fundraising component via an Indiegogo page, with benefits. For $500, you can even get Rykka to perform in your own home, in her standard, eye-catching concert get-up. “Of course I’ll be wearing the full outfit,” she said. “With hair bra and everything.” More information at www.indiegogo.com/projects/nature-rocks-2013.

Even if kids go outside for one whole day, it wouldn't change the yearly average of 30 minutes that much. Why not just start a campaign to throw away their cell phones and video games? If they want to be inside, give them a book to read.
