The 11th annual Music Therapy Ride takes place next Saturday (September 8), with special guests including Shannon Tweed-Simmons, MTV’s Nick “Mosh” Marshall—and 54-40. In a call to the Straight, guitarist Dave Genn said that for some time the veteran hitmakers have wanted to be involved in the ride, which goes from Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino to Harrison Hot Springs’ Lakeside Café.

“There’s no question that this is an absolutely wonderful cause,” Genn said. “There’s no denying the power of music when you see it firsthand. And I’m not talking about playing ‘Ocean Pearl’ for the masses. I’m talking about once you have kids—my youngest, who’s two, was picking up the tune to ‘Twinkle, Twinkle’ before she could say ‘Da-da’. It’s a testament to how innate music is to our psyches, and I think that goes part and parcel with this cause. Music is good for the soul.”

Genn added that 54-40 is also donating the fees from its next album to the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund. This year’s ride, meanwhile, is set to raise funds for a second mobile recording studio to tour care facilities in the Lower Mainland. More information is at the Music Therapy Ride website .
