For most people, an Irish Christmas brings to mind a lovingly gift-wrapped potato, a Texas mickey–size bottle of Tullamore Dew Single Malt, and a trip to the hospital after a pikey fight erupts during the carving of the Cornish game hen. On the disturbingly overproduced An Irish Christmas, Emerald Isle chanteuse Moya Brennan does her best to out-Enya Eithne Ní Bhraonáin (who happens to be her sister) with ethereal renditions of “Deck the Halls” and “Joy to the World”. Add authentic Shamrock Shake–flavoured offerings like “Codail a Leanbh” and “Dia Do Bheatha” to the mix, and you’ve got a record that, while too dream-hazed and lush for general consumption, will appeal to anyone with an endless appetite for Irish soda bread and Lucky Charms.
