Dan Mangan heads up newly launched Madic Records

Dan Mangan already has a record deal with Toronto’s Arts & Crafts, but now he’s running a label of his very own. His newly launched Madic Records imprint will operate under the Arts & Crafts umbrella, and offer the Vancouverite a chance to act as curator.

“I had thought about this for a long time,” Mangan told the Straight. “I think most musicians have thought, ‘Oh, man, wouldn’t it be cool to run my own label someday?’ ”

These idle musings turned into action when he fell in love with the latest recordings from Astral Swans (aka Calgary songwriter Matthew Swann). Madic will release a 7-inch single by Astral Swans on March 25; this will be followed by a full-length debut later this year.

Mangan’s plans for Madic are modest, but the new label is already attracting attention from hopeful indie acts. “I’ve had dozens of emails from young bands submitting demos,” he revealed. “As flattering as that is and as exciting as it is—because I’m going to try to listen to everything—I’m not actively looking for bands. I already feel like I’ve bitten off as much as I can possibly chew.”
