JD Samson and MEN at the Cobalt

You don’t have to be well-versed in gender politics or the concept of making art as an act of political protest to appreciate JD Samson & MEN, but it couldn’t hurt. After all, the former Le Tigre member has used her music as a platform to show support for Russian provocateurs Pussy Riot (“Let Them Out or Let Me In”) and South African runner Caster Semenya, who was subjected to controversial gender testing in 2009 (“Semenya”). Then again, there’s no shame in just enjoying the banging electro beats of songs like “Club Thang” and “Fucked Up” and leaving the deep thoughts for another day. Samson herself was recently quoted as saying, with regards to her audiences, “I don’t really care if they are listening to the lyrics or not.” Which means you have the artist’s own permission to check your politics at the door and just dance your ass off when JD Samson and MEN play the Cobalt on Tuesday (March 11).
