C.R. Avery was in fine form when the Georgia Straight asked him what he’ll be performing at Saturday’s (March 15) Pete Seeger Tribute Concert at the Rickshaw Theatre. Besides covering “What Did You Learn in School Today?”, Avery will bring an untitled original that marks the passing of the folk giant and lifelong activist, who died on January 27. It actually began with Avery thinking about this year’s Super Bowl.

“That’s where I was and there was lots going on,” he said, “with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the Chili Peppers lip-synching, and Dylan in a car commercial, and cereal was on special at SuperValu, and Jimmy Fallon was taking over at The Tonight Show and Woody Allen was in the papers, and it was all this stuff—and then all of a sudden, Pete Seeger died. And, like, the list just didn’t matter. That’s that song. I’ve only done it twice.”

Avery is joined at the show by the Sojourners, Ben Rogers, Company B, Ora Cogan, Bob Sumner, Carolyn Mark, and Debra Jean Creelman. Proceeds will benefit the Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre music in prison programs.
