A friend and collaborator of David Bowie has reported that the pop-music legend died of liver cancer.

News of the singer’s death hit yesterday. Even though there had been no previous reports of Bowie being ill, it was revealed on his Twitter account that he had died at 69 after an 18-month fight with an unspecified cancer.

This morning a Belgian theatre director who worked with the iconic artist on a production of Lazarus told a Dutch Radio station that Bowie had been battling liver cancer.

Speaking to NPO Radio 4, director Ivo Van Hov said, “I saw a man fighting. He fought like a lion and kept working through I all. I had incredible respect for that.”

Those who knew Bowie best meanwhile have been Tweeting messages of love for the man behind such classic songs as “The Man Who Sold the World”, “Changes”, and “Ashes to Ashes”.
