Motown Meltdown at the Commodore

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that classic Motown music totally rules. If you don’t like the many massive hits that Berry Gordy’s Detroit-based label pumped out in the ’60s and ’70s, there might be something wrong with you. Heck, we’d go so far as to say that, if you don’t start involuntarily doing the Jerk or the Mashed Potato the second a song by the Supremes or the Miracles comes on the radio, you’re probably a communist or something, and you’re certainly not to be trusted around children, pets, or the elderly. Most of the original artists have passed on or retired, but you’ll find a reasonable facsimile this Saturday (March 29) at the Commodore Ballroom, where a 12-piece band will back up a selection of singers doing their damnedest to recapture some of that old-school soul. Featured performers include the Sojourners, Ali Milner, Mary Zilba, Tom Landa, Dawn Pemberton, Kendra Sprinkling, and Warren Dean Flandez (left). Proceeds will benefit the Shooting Stars Foundation in support of direct-service AIDS agencies, and if you can’t get behind that you’re likely a kitten-hating Bolshevik.
