Edo Van Breemen bites into Afflicted soundtrack

Let’s hope that fictional band Unalaska becomes real band Unalaska at some point. Put together by Brasstronaut’s Edo Van Breemen and the Zolas’ Zach Gray for the new vampire movie Afflicted, the duo has one show under its belt—in Paris. “The film’s producer, Chris Ferguson, called me and said, ‘Do you wanna come to Europe and form this fake band?’” Van Breeman told the Straight in a call from New York. He didn’t need to think too long about it. “‘Sure, when do we go?’” he answered.

Van Breemen and Gray arrived with a handful of new songs “rooted in minimal techno”. Their Parisian nightclub scene forms a key moment in the movie, while both of Unalaska’s members also take acting roles. “I wouldn’t call it acting,” insisted Van Breemen. “I’d say ‘being there’ is more appropriate. Being there inebriated, maybe.”

The film’s connection to Vancouver’s music scene doesn’t end there. Van Breemen also hooked up with singer-songwriter Jay Arner, Brasstronaut bandmate John Walsh, and Japandroids’ Dave Prowse—brother of Afflicted codirector Clif Prowse—to score some incidental music. There are no plans for a soundtrack release, but “we’re talking about it,” said Van Breemen. “Ask me in six months!”
