Black Flag might kill ants on contact, but it sure as hell didn’t kill Keith Morris, who sang on the band’s debut release, the Nervous Breakdown EP. Since then, there’s been plenty to suggest that the iconic, rattily dreadlocked singer is the most indestructible creature in rock ’n’ roll this side of Keith Richards. Morris has gone on to front the hugely influential Circle Jerks, with side dalliances in projects that have included Midget Handjob and Bug Lamp. He’s overcome battles with the bottle to remain sober since 1989 and survived at least one adult-onset-diabetes episode that put him a coma. As he creeps up on 60, Morris is still at it hard-core, fronting Flag, which is ironically more beloved for playing classic Black Flag songs than Black Flag these days. Not content to sweat through the oldies, he’s also pumping out vital new material with Off!—the punk supergroup that headlines Fortune Sound Club on Saturday (April 12). Along with bassist Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), guitarist Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), and drummer Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From the Crypt), Morris will be burning through tracks from the band’s brand-spanking-new Wasted Years. How fucking punk is the record? Well, consider that the cover art is by Raymond Pettibon. Enough said.
