Idan Raichel Project at the Vogue Theatre

Given Israel’s status as a melting pot, peopled by members of the Jewish diaspora from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and elsewhere, it’s no big surprise that musicians who have grown up there draw on influences that are many and varied. And so it is with Idan Raichel, whose songs fuse pop with elements drawn from Arab and Ethiopian music, along with probably everything else the 36-year-old Israeli has ever heard. Raichel is arguably the closest thing to an international pop star Israel has produced to date, having worked with everyone from Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré to American megastar Alicia Keys. Raichel has even performed for U.S. president Barack Obama—twice!—and now he’s coming to play for you, at the Vogue Theatre next Monday (May 12).
