Maple Ridge's Adstock festival celebrates 10 years

      Adstock is a free, outdoor music festival that takes place in Maple Ridge every year. In a call to the Straight, founder Adam Rayburn was eager to explain, on the festival’s 10th anniversary, that he’s really “not as big a douche” as he might sound, having named the event after himself.

      “I was turning 18 in 2005, and I just wanted to have a musically oriented birthday party,” said Rayburn. “So I called it Adstock ’05—both parts of it being a joke, because I wasn’t trying to start a tradition.”

      Adstock ’05 featured Rayburn’s band, Hollow Logo, playing on the family deck. Flash forward to 2014, and Adstock X, taking place at Memorial Peace Park on Sunday (July 6), is headlined by anarcho-punk idealists the Rebel Spell. (Past headliners have included D.O.A. and Ninjaspy.)

      Other acts this year include Montreal ska band the Skinny, Toronto’s Hellbound Hepcats, Langley punks Slow Erase, Wacken Metal Battle semifinalists Witch of the Waste, and Maple Ridge’s own ska punks the Bone Daddies.

      Opening will be two of “the youngest, local-est bands possible” (Vacant Eyes and Treachery), because Rayburn well remembers “being a Grade 11 kid looking for shows in Maple Ridge”.

      So much I didn't have space to mention, but Adam was most grateful when we spoke for the positive influence of Not Yer Buddy's Seamus McThirteen! It's really easy to get to Maple Ridge from downtown on the bus - catch the 160 to Coquitlam and then transfer to the 701; get off at Haney Place Mall. Adstock is a short walk back the way you came, and happening from 1pm to 8pm!
