Coroners are currently performing an autopsy on the body of iconic soul-rocker Prince, who died yesterday at his Paisley Park home in suburban Minneapolis.

Shedding some light on the possible cause of death, it's now being reported by TMZ that the singer's widely reported collapse last week on a private plane was due to an overdose.

Prince's plane was diverted to Moline, Illinois after it was reported that there was an unresponsive male on board.

Once on the ground, paramedics gave the singer an emergency opiate antidote for Percocet.

The highly addictive drug is used to treat moderate to severe pain.

Prince spent three hours on the ground in Moline, and then returned home later to Paisley Park.

Seemingly fully recovered, he was spotted last week riding his bike around his home neighbourhood.

The autopsy on his body is taking place today.
