Fresh and local: Secondhand Habit, Chinese Whispers

Victoria-based Secondhand Habit likes distortion. A lot.

This is clear right from the opening bars of “Rosemary’s Garden”, where Valentine Vandal sounds like he’s singing through a bullhorn into an old rotary telephone that has been jacked into a blown 15-watt guitar amp. Scott Weiland would have dug it. Since making this five-track EP, Vandal has left the band, but presumably Secondhand Habit’s blues-rock-meets-grunge sound remains intact. “Tik Tok” is, sadly, not a Kesha cover, but an oddball raunch-disco number, complete with strings.
