“Go your own waste”: Music Waste festival kicks off next week

While many festivals are plastered in more logos than you can shake a coke at, Vancouver’s Music Waste showcases nothing but the music.

Originating in 1994 as a protest against the industry’s commercialism, the ultra-DIY event has more years under its belt than festival giants like Coachella—and it’s still going strong.

Sprawling over four days from June 2 to 5, the festival will host more than 70 musicians and artists in a number of East Van venues. With past performers including names like Mac DeMarco, White Lung, and Japandroids, Music Waste has become a stepping stone for local artists to crack the big-time on their own terms. And with this year’s offerings including stellar talent Supermoon, did you die, and Shitlord Fuckerman, (no, we didn’t make that up), you can rest assured that Music Waste’s artists will continue to attract attention.

True to its ethos, individual tickets will cost just $5 (that’s less than a packet of cheese, people), and a full festival pass will set you back a mere $15.

With a bill so stacked with community artists, we strongly recommend pre-planning your Waste. Full details can be found here.
