Dave Angel descends upon Vancouver

Releasing electronic music before you were probably in nappies, Dave Angel—or the “Godfather of UK techno”, to you—is finally making the trip across the pond to Vancouver this Saturday (June 11).

Raised in London, England, Angel’s gritty sound combines a classic Detroit base with a European twist of funk and jazz—or, as Angel prefers to define it, “just good party music.” Hailed as “a legend’s legend” (bold but true), Angel’s two-and-a-half decade career has been filled by requests to remix artists as huge as Orbital, Spooky, and Eurythmics. He might have been born before CBC started broadcasting in colour, but don’t let his age put you off. Angel can still party like its 1999.

A vocal advocate for young talent, it’s fitting that Saturday’s show is not just about Angel. Sponsored by Groundwerk—a group dedicated to developing Vancouver’s electronic music scene—the event sees a number of the city’s top performers spinning alongside the UK star. Those in-the-know will recognise key names like Rennie Foster, Joel Armstrong, Nancy Dru and Iain Howie—and those who don’t will be clued in pretty quick. They’ll be joined behind the turntables by up-and-coming performers Jay Douglas, Nathan Mots, Quest, and LVT, who promise to showcase the full range of what Vancouver DJs have to offer.

Dave Angel is at the Waldorf Hotel and then Gorg-O-Mish on Saturday (June 11)
