Now nearly as old as your grandma, The Waldorf has had a storied past. Standing for almost seven decades in the heart of East Van, the iconic property has lived through World War II, the changing of Canada’s flag, and the entirety of Stephen Harper’s repressive regime. Now that’s impressive.

A solid part of the city’s cultural history, The Waldorf has hosted everything from techno raves to one-day festivals. Proving why it continues to be called a master of innovation, this week sees the venue open a new chapter in its history.

This Friday (July 15) marks the grand opening of East Van’s newest nightclub—The Hideaway. Tucked in the back basement corner of the Waldorf, the fully-renovated room is modelled with the secretive, hedonistic aesthetic of an old speakeasy. Inviting you to look through the peephole, inquisitive partygoers will find a door to an underground club, decorated with a rich décor that would titillate even Al Capone.

Offering a departure from the Waldorf’s typical programming, The Hideaway is built with boomers in mind. One of the only local venues to schedule live music instead of DJs, the new room lines up an all-star collective of Vancouver musicians and vocalists—including Cameron Grant and Krystle Dos Santos—to entertain its audiences. Performing classic rock and soul every weekend, The Hideout is soon set to be bumping to the sound of Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Motown, and classic British '60s tracks.

Dubbed a “full-on retro-themed room for adults who want to dance,” The Hideaway is a must for any self-respecting party animal.

Plus, if you can’t shake that burning desire to throw on your hula skirt, The Waldorf still hosts the best tiki bar in the city.
