Night Nation Run coming to Vancouver

In recent years, various event companies in Vancouver have attempted to make running fun and social. We’ve had the Sun Run, which packs thousands of people onto the city’s narrow streets. The town has hosted the Colour Me Rad jog, which leaves you scrubbing paint out of the inside of your ears for months. And there’s Tough Mudder, which actually electrocutes you as part of the course.

Fortunately, there’s a new addition to the running calendar that looks a bit more fun. Or at least better than voluntarily exposing yourself to 10,000 volts.

Billed as the world’s first running music festival, the Night Nation Run is a 5 km circuit replete with live music, lights, lasers, and a whole lot of bros in vests. Encouraging participants to run, walk, skip or dance their way through the course, the emphasis is on entertainment rather than sports. As athletes make their way around the track, they pass multiple DJ stages. If they like what they hear, runners can choose to stop and party while the race is on—and we use the word “race” very liberally. (Not to point out the obvious, but if you’re trying to set a 5 km PB, this probably isn’t the place to do it.)

Featuring a pre-rave from 7 p.m. until the event’s start, the Night Nation Run gives participants plenty of time to warm up to some EDM classics. With multiple lightshows, selfie-stations, confetti guns, fog, and Glow Gear giveaways lining the course between DJ booths, the longer you take to get round the track, the better. Though, with a surprise headline artist spinning at the finish line’s main stage, there’s a pretty good incentive to actually complete that 5 km. If you’ve still got the legs after dancing.

Night Nation Run is at the PNE on August 6.
