Chin Injeti celebrated by Music Heals
An inaugural fundraising gala for Music Heals will include a celebration of the career of musician and producer Chin Injeti.
Injeti, who was a founding member of Bass Is Base and went on to help produce Eminem’s Grammy-winning album Recovery, benefited from music therapy as a child.
According to Chris Brandt, the executive director of Music Heals, music-therapy pioneer Fran Herman taught Injeti to walk again after he had polio.
“It’s a great story arc from here’s someone that was allowed to be normal because of music therapy, and music has become his whole career and he’s now working on a level where he’s working on a Grammy album,” Brandt told the Straight by phone.
The Strike A Chord benefit, set to take place at the Imperial next Thursday (October 23), is aimed at increasing access to local music-therapy programs.
In the organization’s first full year in 2013, it raised $100,000 to support additional music-therapy hours at facilities including B.C. Children’s Hospital and the Dr. Peter Centre.
“Places that have a therapist a couple days a week, we try to add a day,” said Brandt.
LG 104.3 and Newcap Radio have committed to covering the production costs of the Strike A Chord gala over the next seven years.
The inaugural event will feature performances from acts including the Matinée and the Booms Booms.
Tickets are $150, and $100 of each ticket will be eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Tickets are available at the Music Heals website.
