You know what’s funny? The fact that, in the right hands, funk and R&B are pretty much the epitome of what you might call “soul music”, but the slicker they get, the more soulless they sound. I strongly advise against attempting to “get funky” during the holidays, especially if you’re prone to fits of the Hustle. If you must, however, I recommend you seek out something with grit, like Clarence Carter’s “Back Door Santa” or James Brown’s “Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto”. Anything but this Holiday, which is sort of like being served a mug full of Baileys mixed with peppermint syrup and topped with whipped cream and broken-candy-cane sprinkles, when what you really wanted was a straight shot of Irish whisky.
