Holiday discs 2014: Sonja Aldén's Jul i andlighetens rum

      Sonja Aldén
      Jul i andlighetens rum

The album’s title is fair warning that Sonja Aldén, in a colossal display of nerve and ignorance, couldn’t be bothered to sing in English for this 12-track outing. Don’t hold that against the U.K.–born Swedish singing sensation. Downbeat and mostly stripped to acoustic guitars and strings, Jul i andlighetens rum is as beautiful as a Stockholm snowfall at midnight, making it perfect for sitting alone with a 40-pounder of Absolut at 3 in the morning. As a bonus, Swedish versions of standards like “O Holy Night” (sung here as “O Helga Natt”) might actually help you expand your Scandinavian vocabulary beyond the words ABBA, Alexander Skarsgård, and Elin Nordegren.
