Musicians serve up recipes in Willy Jak’s punk-rock cookbook

When you see that the Dead Kennedys have contributed to Willy Jak’s new punk-rock cookbook, Chaos in the Kitchen, you might do a double take.

Jak plays bass for the Dayglo Abortions, and Jello Biafra is supposedly no fan. In fact, the Kennedys’ former vocalist is absent, Jak explained to the Straight by phone from Victoria, but “East Bay Ray made a gin drink, sort of a gin fizz situation,” while drummer D. H. Peligro contributed a basil-garlic dressing. Plus onetime DKs ringer-singer Brandon Cruz, of Dr. Know, contributed a snack named after the Dog Bowl skate park, one of the recipes inspired by Thrasher Magazine’s Scarfing Material section, which Jak, a member of the Jaks skate team and a long-time employee of the food-service industry, used to read regularly.

Other contributions range from those of Jak’s own bandmates (like vocalist Murray Acton’s alcoholic “Real Fucking Good Milkshake”) to that of Rat Scabies of the Damned, who offers the unfortunate-sounding “Rat Scabie Chili”, which involves dried pineapple. “It’s a little bit weird, but it’s actually quite good,” said Jak, who’s tested every recipe in the book. Both vegetarian and nonvegetarian options—from MDC vocalist Dave Dictor’s avocado salad to Forgotten Rebels frontman Mickey De Sadist’s curried goat—are represented. Presumably, Tesco (Meatmen) Vee’s “Horse Cock Gumbo Poopa” falls in the latter camp, but we really don’t want to know what the ingredients are for that one.

The book can be ordered at www.punkrockcookbook.com/ or picked up at merch tables. The Dayglo Abortions’ 10th studio album, The Armageddon Survival Guide, is due out in March.
