My Favourite Thing: Marina Hasselberg

    1 of 2 2 of 2

My Favourite Thing is a video feature where the Georgia Straight gets interesting folks from around town to list off, among other things, their favourite performers, live gigs, and more. And, of course, their favourite thing.

You might recognize classical cellist Marina Hasselberg from her orchestral perfomances with the NOVO Ensemble, a Vancouver-based chamber music group, of which she is also the artistic director.

Since moving to Canada in 2008 and completing a Masters degree in literature and performance, Hasselberg has wowed audiences as a player in a host of renowned ensembles, including the American Bach Soloists Academy Orchestra in San Francisco, the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute Orchestra in Toronto, and a number of local groups including the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and the Redshift Music Society.

When Hasselberg isn't preparing for performances, advocating for the arts, or commissioning new pieces, she teaches cello to students of all ages and abilities.

Her next performance will take place at Western Front (303 East 8th Avenue) as part of the Wave Equation Series. Hasselberg will perform alongside artists Sarah Davachi and Kiran Bhumber in Sensored and Synthesized on Friday (November 4).
