Women take over the turntables at M.I.A.’s Femme Fatale night

It’s no secret that the electronic dance music scene is exploding in Vancouver. But while the genre’s emergence into more mainstream channels has opened it up to a more balanced audience, the decks remain dominated by men.

Gastown club M.I.A., however, is beginning to change that. Although the city’s numerous underground shows act as a petri-dish for upcoming producers, M.I.A. has instead built its brand on marrying higher-profile, internationally-touring artists with the city’s best up-and-coming DJs—regardless of their gender.

One of the few venues in the city to offer a regular night with an all-female lineup, M.I.A. is leading the charge for equality in dance music across mainstream venues. Launching the Femme Fatale club-night earlier this year, the venue provides a platform for women to showcase their talent behind the turntables. Featuring high-quality regulars like Sivz and Sara Sukkha, the monthly event has already gathered a sizable following on its Saturday spots.

December’s Femme Fatale develops the club’s growing roster of resident DJs. This Saturday’s show will feature established performers AWood, Misssheavious, and Mynxy, with support from up-and-comers Lyndan Kelly and Akimi. Both rooms will be taken over for the night, and the performers will be spinning a blend of bass and house until the club’s 3 a.m. curfew.

By hosting some of the city’s best female talent in the Blueprint-operated club, Femme Fatale provides the link between underground parties and established venues. Here’s to hoping more venues follow suit.

Femme Fatale takes place at M.I.A. (350 Water Street) on Saturday (December 10).
