Israeli house and techno producer Guy Gerber to get deep at M.I.A.

Not many house music producers can say they got high with Puff Daddy in the desert at Burning Man, jammed for 70 minutes in an RV, and ended up with a first-class track. Not many DJs can allege that they created the hottest event series in Ibiza. And not many musicians manage to live like a hedonist party-boy while still maintaining credibility in the underground.

Guy Gerber, however, can lay claim to all three.

The Israeli producer’s first forays into music explored the stripped-down, melancholic sounds of bands like Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine: a theme that still resonates in his tracks of today. Already having released four full-length albums including a special mix for U.K. club Fabric, Gerber’s latest double A-side Secret Encounters taps into a similar vein by exploring a dark, enigmatic tech house sound, complete with ambiguous vocal rambles and ethereal synths.

As a performer, Gerber is consistently ranked as one of the best touring acts in dance music. Holding residencies at high-end venues from Ibiza’s Pacha to New York’s Marquee and Florida’s Story nightclub, the DJ is famous for bucking trends and producing extended sets that stretch for up to 12 hours.

While that length of performance can’t be expected when the artist heads to Vancouver’s M.I.A. this week—the lights come on at 3 a.m., after all—Gerber is sure to load his show with floor-filling house and techno, following his own philosophy of building an experience based on mysticism and mystique.

And you never know. Maybe if you pack an RV with a whole cabinet-full of drugs and park it outside the venue, you too might be able to create a genre-defying album with the producer.

Guy Gerber is at M.I.A. on Saturday (December 17)
