Grammy Awards absences grab as much attention as Beyoncé's nine nominations

In the minds of some of the music industry's biggest stars, the Grammy Awards might as well be known as the Granny Awards.

Drake, who's nominated in eight categories, is touring in Europe and will miss tonight's show.

Frank Ocean didn't even submit his album Blonde to the 59th annual Grammy Awards, claiming that the Recording Academy doesn't appreciate his type of music.

People magazine has also reported that Kanye West and Justin Bieber might also not be there.

In 2011, West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was not nominated for Album of the Year.

Two years ago, he had a public tantrum, trying to storm the stage, when Beck won Album of the Year over Beyoncé.

Last year, West said that he doesn't think the Grammys are "culturally relevant".

According to an unnamed TMZ source, Bieber has said that the Grammys are not relevant to younger singers.

Kanye West has expressed his disdain for the Grammys on more than one occasion.

This isn't the first time musicians have snubbed the Grammys.

In 2008, Tool lead singer Maynard James Keenan had this to say; "I think the Grammys are nothing more than some gigantic promotional machine for the music industry. They cater to a low intellect and they feed the masses. They don't honor the arts or the artist for what he created. It's the music business celebrating itself."

Back in 1991, Sinead O'Connor boycotted the Grammys for their "extreme commercialism". She refused her trophy for Best Alternative Musical Performance.

This was later spoofed in a hilarious Saturday Night Live skit with Jan Hooks playing O'Connor, Dana Carvey impersonating Paul McCartney, and Mike Meyers acting as Phil Collins.

In another SNL video (see below) from that era, O'Connor squared off with Frank Sinatra on the state of the music industry.

James Corden will host tonight's Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

There will be performances by Lady Gaga, Metallica, Katy Perry, Adele, The Weeknd, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, Chance the Rapper, and, according to her dad, the famously pregnant Beyoncé.

Bey's Lemonade leads the pack with nine nominations, including for Album of the Year, Record of the Year ("Formation"), and Song of the Year ("Formation").

The other Album of the Year nominees are Adele (25), Drake (Views), Bieber (Purpose), and Sturgill Simpson (A Sailor's Guide to Earth).

Over his career Drake has received 35 Grammy nominations but has only won once. It was Best Rap Album for Take Care in 2013.
