Of the 150 or so free shows presented by the Jazz Festival this year, Cecilia Monte’s night of bossa nova at Performance Works on July 1 might have been the sultriest. Vancouverites can still catch the vocalist a few more times before she leaves for her home in Argentina, since she’s found herself with a residency at the Main on Main (4210 Main Street), where she plays every Thursday until July 26.
Monte told the Straight that she first visited Vancouver in 2010 to “touch base” with the jazz scene. “I came here to study and to play with some jazz musicians from here, and pretty much get connected,” she said. Clearly, it worked out for her, since she’s joined at the Main by local boys Yujiro Nakajima on guitar and drummer Liam MacDonald.
