Foster The People at Deer Lake Park

Here’s a theory:Foster the People isn’t just a band that has ridden its sickeningly catchy 2010 hit “Pumped Up Kicks” further than anyone would have dreamed. It’s also an elaborate tribute to Martin Scorsese’s timeless ode to alienation, Taxi Driver. Remember that scene where the buttons arrive in the campaign office staffed by Cybill Shepherd and Albert Brooks, and how they make a big deal out of whether “We are the people” has a different meaning than “We are the people.” And who starred in the role of Iris in Taxi Driver? Well, it wasn’t Melanie Griffith, Linda Blair, Bo Derek, Carrie Fisher, or Mariel Hemingway, all of whom were up for the part. It was Jodie Foster. So if you’re going to go to Foster the People at Deer Lake Park on Monday (June 25), might we suggest that there are more appropriate ways of getting out to Burnaby than by car, bus, bicycle, or shank’s mare. To acknowledge that you are in on the secret, take a taxi. Just make sure it’s not driven by a Vietnam vet with a mohawk.
