Jody Glenham goes solo again

She made theStraight’s best-of issue in 2009 for her album Focus Pull, and we haven’t heard a peep since. That’s not strictly true: Jody Glenham recorded a song for the Light Organ Records Christmas compilation last year, and she’s been busy helping out other outfits like White Ash Falls since switching from piano to guitar a couple years back. But a new, Shawn Cole–produced solo track called “Gypsy Babe” appeared out of the blue this week on Glenham’s bandcamp, and it’s a doozy. What’s the story?

“It’s taken a while to find the groove with the new sound,” Glenham told the Straight, explaining that the recording was funded by an artist grant from John Fluevog. “Basically, my tastes have changed so much over the last three years, and it’s hard to articulate in the studio how I want things to sound. But I‘m getting closer to it and that’s why this single came out. As you get older, your tastes become more refined, you discover vintage gear, you discover that reverb is not just something you hide a voice behind but is something that can actually add to the ambience of the song.”

To that end, “Gypsy Babe” forgoes the baroque pop of Focus Pull for something swoonier and more atmospheric, “like Mazzy Star with more harmonies,” in Glenham’s words. Check it out at BandCamp's website.
