Local acts hosting SXSW fundraiser at the Biltmore

The annual South by Southwest festival is one of the landmark events of the music calendar, and some of Vancouver's finest local talent will be traveling to Austin, Texas, later this month to take part. Before they head south, Mint Records, Olio Festival, and Light Organ Records will be teaming up for a fundraiser show at the Biltmore tonight (March 2).

The bill will feature some hometown favourites in Mode Moderne, Sun Wizard, Hot Panda, and DJ My!Gay!Husband! (aka Olio co-founder Jason Sulyma). All of the money raised will help to pay for a high-profile showcase at SXSW. "We're having a really big party down in Texas," Sulyma told the Straight. "We've got Andrew W.K., Nardwuar and the Evaporators, Shout Out Out Out Out, and then some locals."

Sulyma explained that hosting a gig at SXSW is a major cash drain, but noted that this is necessary in order to raise the profile of some of Vancouver's best artists. "Our bands are good enough to stand next to other bands from around the world," he said.

Tickets for the fundraiser, which are only available at the door, cost $10 before 10 p.m. and $13 afterward.

reality check
Everyone knows SXSW has just become one big clusterf*** -- unless you already have a profile nobody's gonna notice your band among the thousands of others reeking of desperation. Money spent to travel there would be better spent taking some master classes on your instruments.
You're welcome.

Don't forget you're going to pay rent for myFatHusband as well. If mode moderne or sun wizard perform in Austin with anything touting any sort of "We're representing the best in Vancouver music" line, I for one will seriously embarrassed.
