Musical moments of 2012: Top videos

      Mac DeMarco
      “Ode To Viceroy”
Montreal-crooner Mac DeMarco’s “Ode To Viceroy” celebrates his love for this cheap, Canadian cigarette brand through old-school, VHS-inspired, fisheye-lens footage. Created by Jasper Baydala, the video is sketchy and creepy while reading like an old Capstan ad from the 1950’s. Not suitable for children. Or lung-cancer patients.

      “I Ejaculate Fire”
If somebody claims that they ejaculate fire, then the beauty of this video is that it answers the inevitable follow-up question—why? Turns out that a skull-faced succubus with a killer rack is required to introduce “testicular propane” into your blackened scrote via the tried-and-true method, something rendered here in the kind of medically explicit terms that any banger can easily understand. Safe sex, kids!

      PSY
      “Gangnam Style”
Don’t lie: you liked it too, and you probably even tried to do the dance. There’s a reason “Gangnam Style” took a mere two months to become the most liked video in YouTube history, and four months to become the most viewed: it’s outrageously entertaining. Really, “Gangnam Style” has it all, including explosions, a dude rapping on a toilet, and full-grown adults doing a ride-’em- cowboy dance that looks like something a six-year-old came up with. Our great hope for 2013, however, is that we never see the damn thing again.

      Jack White
      “Sixteen Saltines”
The gritty punk-blues salvo of “Sixteen Saltines” is given the perfect accompaniment by this collection of girls-and-boys-gone-wild vignettes. Seemingly taking place in a world where Jack White is the last responsible adult standing, the video features kids trashing abandoned buildings, tattooing their faces, using gas masks as bongs, and generally running violently amok like Satan’s little spawn. With an anarchic, exploitation-film feel and a scene with White tied up and writhing, what’s not to love?

      Neil Young & Crazy Horse
      “Ramada Inn”
The closest thing to a single off the Canadian icon’s long and challenging Psychedelic Pill takes a moody trek into love and alcohol. Unlike the video’s male protagonist, not a second of its 17-minute running time is wasted.

      Amanda Palmer
“Do It With a Rock Star”
Pop music’s most tireless social networker (or shameless attention whore) proves she’s got a sense of humour about herself, starting the clip off with drag queens getting catty about her armpit hair and then having a gaggle of hipsters slam her as a Scientologist and an “ableist”. From there, you get a sweat-and-mascara-smeared live nightclub performance, backstage fruit-related debauchery, a cameo by director Wayne Coyne, and adult-movie goddess Stoya in a major guest-starring role. A naked guest-starring role. Thank you, God.
