Rihanna delivers unfortunate coincidences at Rogers Arena in Vancouver

Comments

At Rogers Arena on Friday, June 24

Well, it was certainly flashy. If it was hyperkinetic dance routines, costume changes, and retina-bombing visuals you were after, Rihanna’s Rogers Arena concert on Friday night (the first of two shows there) certainly delivered. The 23-year-old Barbadian R&B superstar kicked things off with “Only Girl (in the World)”, surrounded by dancers in outfits that suggested DayGlo raver gear might be making an unwelcome comeback. As for Rihanna herself, she sported Ronald McDonald-red hair, pink and neon-green pumps, and a blue mini dress that didn’t leave a whole lot to the imagination as far as her legs were concerned.

She lost the dress for the next number, “Disturbia”, stripping down to a bikini that appeared to have been cobbled together out of Spandex, sequins, and liquorice allsorts. She kept that on for “Shut Up and Drive”, which ended with guitarist Nuno Bettencourt—yes, the guy from Extreme—shredding atop a wrecked car, which was further trashed by her dancers. Let’s assume Rihanna hasn’t been keeping up with the news coming out of her favourite Canadian city while she’s been on tour, because this particular spectacle hit a little too close to home. Let’s call it Unfortunate Coincidence Number 1. At least Bettencourt wasn’t wearing a Canucks jersey, and no one set the damn car on fire.

Rihanna disappeared for a bit after the reggae-inflected “Man Down”, while a visual projection served notice that things were about to get a little freaky. The video showed two Rihannas, one dressed as a man and the other a woman, making bedroom eyes at each other. When the real thing re-emerged, she was clad in a black tuxedo, and interacting suggestively with more scantily clad dancers. This included pretending to cane their behinds, which might have been hot if it hadn’t been done to the tune of an ill-advisedly metallic and frankly pretty lame version of Prince’s “Darling Nikki”. This segued into “S&M”, which found a white-corseted Rihanna chained up, and one of her percussionists keeping a beat with a cat-o’-nine-tails. Very kinky and all, but ending the song with a choreographed pillow fight sort of took the sting out of it.

A costume change or two later, Rihanna rolled out astride a mockup of a tank that shot out puffs of smoke flanked by dancers in camouflage outfits carrying guns. The message? That’s anyone’s guess. The fact that all the weapons were painted bubblegum pink suggested some indecipherable commentary on the battle of the sexes, but that might be giving Rihanna and her production team too much credit. A more likely explanation is that war stuff looks cool. Or at least it does until your city is the one that's burning.

Speaking of which, accompanying “Run This Town” (“Only thing that’s on my mind/Is who’s gonna run this town tonight”) with visuals of flames and bandanna-wearing rioters counts as Unfortunate Coincidence Number 2.

If none of the above really showed off Rihanna’s vocal chops in any significant way, a mini set of ballads seemed designed to do so. Unfortunately, it also dragged the concert into a low-energy lull from which it never fully recovered. “Unfaithful” is a decent piece of melodrama, but “Hate That I Love You” is unmemorable and “California King Bed” merely gave Bettencourt an excuse for an overblown wank session.

And that’s kind of the problem with Rihanna in general: as appealing a performer as she is, she doesn’t have quite enough first-class material in her catalogue to round out a two-hour show. Yes, “Rude Boy” is a fun, dirty romp, but “Cheers (Drink to That)” is the sort of filler that even die-hards would be hard-pressed to defend.

Thankfully, the evening ended on a high note, with a two-song encore that started with “Love the Way You Lie (Part II)”, which RiRi delivered from atop a piano that slowly rose above the stage. Her singing was both heartfelt and technically accomplished, and those are tricky elements to balance. The concert closed with the inevitable “Umbrella”, a shower of confetti, and no more Unfortunate Coincidences.

OH MY GOD. not everything has to be about those stupid riots. If you're so traumatized that you can't look at a wrecked car then you should probably go live in a cave, and stop writing absolute crap.

I'm not a Rihanna fan, but you just made vancouerites sound like a bunch of scared puppies. Get over it.

The first song I ever heard from Rihanna was "Umbrella". The constantly repeating of the 'Chorus' nearly drove me crazy. To me, every song since has made me turn her off, tune her out or make my neices play something else. As for mentioning coincidences, which she obviously made reference to: are we just supposed to ignore it and hope it disappears? With artists like Rihanna, it never will. Thanks for another great review.

I'm sorry but this article is wack. I was also at the concert last night and she put up one AWESOME show. In no way at all do I see her performances as an "unfortunate coincidence". It's all part of her damn routine. She does the same performance in the states too. Is that also a coincidence? Stop being so shallow. The riot was yesterday's news. It's already been said but I'll say it again: GET OVER IT.

Funny that I am oh-so-not a hockey fan in what is clearly, unfortunately, a hockey puck crazy town . . . point is that I didn't even get the references to the coincidences you pointed out -- a) whatever about that Stanley Cup thing, and b) riots happen everywhere, all over the world, and Rihanna is an international (super)star.

The show was amazing, audience was fab (GO VANCOUVER!) and you are a moron.

I absolutely loved the concert. She is a fab performer, an amazing artist, and does so well live! It was unreal. June 25, I was sitting right in front of her. Floor seats, First row, Seat 25, dancing away to her beats, skipping to the rhythm, and thoroughly enjoying myself. She proceeded to make my night so so much better when she threw her white raybans to me. I was soooooo ecstatic... like a child in a candy store because these rays were sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettt. I was luckyy! and you're probably thinking "was"? What happened? Well, I had left those in my friends Cady dashdrawer. By the end of the night, I was so sick, that by the time I got home I forgot to retrieve them thinking its fine get them tomorrow. This morning, I woke up with a sinking feeling that something was gonna go wrong. True enough. My wonderful memories of wearing, holding and being the owner of formerly riri's Raybans were short lived. I received a call from my friend, who had taken her car in for detailing, stating that everything from her car was stolen, including my raybans. I am so upset by this. Nevertheless, concert was amazing. And I thank Rihanna for passing the Raybans to me.

If you get the chance watch her in concert.

Shay:

Glad you loved the concert. As far as those Raybans go, though, do you really think the first thing on your friend's mind the morning after a late night of partying is to take her car in for detailing?
Really?
I'm just sayin', is all....

I'm in whole-hearted agreement with Angie. Can we please stop talking about the riots for frick's sake? We seem like such a bunch of pansies the way we keep talking about offended and disgusted we all are, and how we so desperately want to take our reputation back. What reputation? Believe it or not, stupid people live everywhere, including Metro Van.
Also, in regards to the comment that Rihanna's mini-dress didn't leave much up to the imagination in regards to her legs, um, so what? That's the point of a mini-dress is to show off some sexy gams, which Rihanna definitely has. Would you prefer her and all other women to be clothed from head to toe in a paper sack? That comment came off as really sexist and that irks me more than the over-sensitivity to "riot" imagery. Come on!

This was quite honestly the most ridiculous review I have ever read.

What Canadian is gonna be offended or even think of the riots just because she has some cars she bats around during one of her acts.

"Rihanna rolled out astride a mockup of a tank that shot out puffs of smoke flanked by dancers in camouflage outfits carrying guns. The message? That’s anyone’s guess. The fact that all the weapons were painted bubblegum pink suggested some indecipherable commentary on the battle of the sexes,"

......Have you seen the video or heard the song? It's called "Hard" and is basically a song warring on her critics, hence why battle tanks props are used for the set.

"Or at least it does until your city is the one that's burning."

really?!

"And that’s kind of the problem with Rihanna in general: as appealing a performer as she is, she doesn’t have quite enough first-class material in her catalogue to round out a two-hour show."

Rihanna has more #1 hits than all but Madonna, Mariah, Whitney & Janet - who have been around decades. She has almost 20 top 10's. Her music is also reviewed better than all of her popstar peers.

Great review. I thought the S&M number was way too over the top, offensive and not suitable. Sorry, but that is not something girls and women should be portrayed like. I suppose the guys need to be kept happy. It was a good, entertaining show, just found the baseball bats and car too sensitive after what we've just been through

Like Rihanna gives a shtye about the "Critic" made by this columnist and/or the others in the Forum :).

Rihanna is Private Jet setting, drinking champagne & living life while making more than any of you whiners ever will, instead of wage slavery like some here :)

Anyway what ever happened to report the news / event instead of the "reporters" / columnist personal likes/dislikes.

@KTFO... please see the definition of 'review'.

Or do you mean that he should report the news/event impartially like "This just in: Rihanna rocks light-brite bikini. Fans contemplate spanking."?

Yeah, the riots are SOO yesterday. Raybans, on the other hand, they just never go out of style.
