On the road for Insite

Joey Only hit Ottawa this week on the final leg of a cross-country tour raising awareness for Insite. Along with Leah Martin of the Portland Hotel Community Services Society, the Vancouver-based anti-folksinger started picketing the constituency offices of key Tory decision makers on May 13, as the exemption expiry date for the Downtown Eastside supervised-injection site loomed on June 30.

The project took the duo to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Calgary riding, as well as the office of Health Minister Tony Clement in Huntsville, Ontario, among others.

Speaking to the Straight from Ottawa, Only said, “We need the Tories to back down on all levels—the Conservative strategy in the drug war is so aggressive that the struggle has to be kept up. It’s outdated, it isn’t working, it’s not really made in Canada or up-to-date with modern science.”

Only and Martin’s latest demonstration, planned for today (June 5), will include planting crosses on Parliament Hill to represent Insite’s 868 overdose interventions. Only will return to Vancouver for a CD-release party for his latest album, Fire on Anarchist Mountain, at the Royal Unicorn Cabaret on July 4.
