A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman in downtown Vancouver.

Dustin Burwood of Vancouver faces a charge of sexual assault causing bodily harm. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Thursday (February 7).

According to Vancouver police, a 25-year-old Vancouver woman was allegedly grabbed by a man while she stood in the 600 block of Smithe Street in the early morning of January 30. She was sexually assaulted in a lane by the 900 block of Granville Street. Witnesses intervened upon hearing her screams, and the man fled on foot.

“This was a very traumatic situation, but she managed to do what was necessary to protect herself,” Det. Const. Lorena Andersen of the Vancouver Police Sex Crimes Unit said in a news release. “The fact that she fought back and screamed may well have prevented further injury.”

The police department is holding a Women’s Safety Fair on Friday (February 8) from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Langara College (100 West 49 Avenue).
