India’s top lawmakers have passed a new bill to fight sexual violence against women following a gang rape in Delhi that sparked outrage across the country.

The Parliament of India today (March 21) approved legislation which makes crimes of sexual harassment, stalking, and voyeurism, the Associated Press reports.

The bill also allows for the death penalty in cases involving fatal rape attacks and repeat offenders.

The new law comes after calls for the government to take action to protect women in the wake of the gang rape and death of a 23-year-old woman in the country’s capital city.
