Melissa De Genova still wants park board chair Sarah Blyth to step down over tweet

Melissa De Genova has mixed feelings about withdrawing her motion to censure Vancouver park board chair Sarah Blyth.

The park commissioner told the Straight that she pulled her motion at the board meeting on Monday (April 22) not because Blyth actually apologized there for having sent out a tweet last month that called De Genova a “liar”.

It’s because pursuing the motion would mean hiring a third-party facilitator and devoting staff hours to the matter, thereby costing Vancouver taxpayers, De Genova explained.

The Non-Partisan Association park commissioner also noted that she asked for an apology from Blyth at the board table on April 22 but that the Vision Vancouver park chair didn’t oblige. Although she withdrew her motion, De Genova insists that the Vision majority caucus should select a new chair.

“I haven’t received any negative comments or feedback publicly from many of the commissioners,” De Genova said by phone when asked who among the four other Vision commissioners she can work with better.

Blyth related that she emailed and sent a tweet to De Genova days before the meeting. Her email reads in part: “I apologize if my tweet offended you.”

According to Blyth, she asked De Genova during the meeting if she “wanted anything more than that or if she accepted those apologies”. Blyth recalled that De Genova said “yes” to having accepted the online apologies.

“That’s the end of it” for Blyth, who told the Straight by phone: “I’m hoping we can move on.”

Said De Genova on Monday in a Province quote: “I acknowledge that there was an informal apology and I’m very excited to move forward with the business of the board.”
