Vancouver park board to consider two new community gardens

Vancouver park-board commissioners are scheduled to vote Monday (May 13) on proposals to establish two new community gardens.

Proponents want to establish the gardens in Cambie and Charleson parks, in the Marpole-Oakridge and False Creek South neighbourhoods, respectively. Both proposals were received by the city in response to an October 2012 call for espressions of interest for new community gardens and orchards.

The Cambie Park garden is proposed by the South Vancouver Green Thumbs and supported by the Marpole-Oakridge Community Association, and the False Creek South Neighbourhood Association and the Charleson Park Community Gardeners teamed up for the Charleson Park bid.

Both the South Vancouver Green Thumbs and the Charleson Park Community Gardeners had their initial requests for board decisions deferred in March this year because of concerns over location and public-consultation.

City staff are recommending that board commissioners approve the new gardens, which further “the objectives of the Park Board’s Strategic Plan and the Greenest City Action Plan” and meet “the criteria of the Community Garden Policy”. In addition to building “community connections”, staff wrote in the park-board briefing notes, the plots will also “contribute to increasing our local food assets”.
