Jon Stewart gave hope to progressives, but he'll soon be gone from The Daily Show

Fans of Jon Stewart are in mourning over his announcement that he's leaving The Daily Show later this year.

The U.S. comedic icon has gleefully skewered Republican blowhards and Fox News hypocrites on his show for 17 years with the help of some hilarious correspondents.

He's taken political comedy to new heights and turned some powerful politicians and business tycoons like Rupert Murdoch into objects of ridicule.

With a mere look of exasperation, a shrug of his shoulders, a wide grin, or a shake of his head, Stewart contextualizes the news for younger viewers unlike anyone else on television.

He's no radical, once apologizing for describing former president Harry Truman as a war criminal for dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

But Stewart can still be relied on to let Americans know when reactionary politicians like Marco Rubio and John Boehner or former vice president Dick Cheney or Fox broadcasters like Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity have said something incredibly stupid. Which happens pretty often, leaving him with no shortage of material.

At this point, it's unclear who his replacement will be.

Jon Stewart takes down CNN's Crossfire.

see him take on social issues in documentary film (like Michael Moore but with integrity). If he goes into politics, I'll stop believing that he was ever sincere to begin with.

Vacating his chair could not have come soon enough. Maybe he and Michael Moore can have coffee together each morning and share war stories.

      The thing about Stewart

He skewered EVERYONE who deserved skewering! The reason you think it was all Republicans and right wing business interests is because they offered the richest vein of material to work with.

Dennis miller, who is very funny, tried comedy from the right. It proved unsustainable as there just isn't enough material from that perspective. You can only do so many semen stains on the dress jokes.
