50 dogs dumped at animal shelters in New Westminster and Richmond
The RCMP is investigating the abandonment of an unprecedented number of dogs in two municipalities.
A dozen were left in cages at the New Westminster Animal Shelter at 4 a.m. on August 30.
Another 38 dogs were placed outside the Richmond shelter, according to a news release issued by the City of New Westminster.
"We want to encourage the public to consider fostering or adopting some of these dogs,” New Westminster animal-services coordinator Sukh Maghera said. “Our shelter is currently full, so even temporary homes would be welcomed.”
The New Westminster shelter is at 231 Ewen Avenue and can be reached by phone at 604-519-2008.
The Richmond Animal Protection Society (604-275-2036) operates two shelters in Richmond, including the city's facility at 12071 No. 5 Road.
It's closed on weekends and statutory holidays, but is open for animal viewing, visiting, and adopting from noon to 5:30 p.m. during weekdays.
