Public rallies around sexual-assault victim in Strathcona

According to the crowdfunding Go Fund Me website, more than $25,000 has been raised to help a woman who was attacked in her East Vancouver home on March 26.

According to police, a man with a weapon tied her up and sexually assaulted her. She did not know the person, who was later apprehended by police and charged.

Because she screamed and resisted, a neighbour came to her rescue and she was able to escape. She's now in hospital recovering from her injuries, according to a Vancouver police news release.

Below, you can read what was posted on the Go Fund Me site to generate donations to help the woman. (Anyone who wishes to donate can go here.)

On Thursday my neighbour was brutally assaulted by a stranger who broke into her home. She was very brave and smart and strong. She fought back. She made noise. And help came in the form of some amazing heroic neighbours who showed a lot of courage, who stepped up, stopped this horrible crime, and probably saved this young woman's life. This woman is a survivor, and will need as much support from the community as we can give her. Recovery can be a long road, and donations will go directly to support her and fund her recovery. This could be your sister, your daughter, your partner, your friend. As a city, as a community, please donate anything you can. Let's show our support for this brave young woman. Let her know that neighbours care,  our community cares, and our city cares. Neighbourhood heroes, thank you.

I'm looking forward to when international womens day is celebrated 365 days a year, and March 8th is a somber reminder of the injustices we perpetrated on our Electric Ladies in the past. But words on a blog are only going to take us so far.

We need action. We need love.

So while you're patiently waiting for the rest of us, all of you current and future Electric Ladies out there, stand tall and Keep Shining :)
