Parking profiteers must pay heed to history

I spent September 17 to 22 at the Truth and Reconciliation Week events [“Walk for reconciliation draws thousands in Vancouver”, web-only]. I listened to stories of abuse by survivors of the residential schools in the sharing-circle area.

I arrived at the Walk for Reconciliation at 8:00 a.m. on September 22 and was going to park in an almost empty lot in front of Rogers Arena. I was shocked when the only choice I had on the parking meter was an event price of $20. I looked at the sign that said Sunday parking was $6, so I went to the 800 block of Beatty Street and parked for $5.

I am asking Rogers Arena, the Vancouver Canucks, Concord Pacific, and Francesco Aquilini to put pressure on WestPark to make up for being so greedy for profit that it would try to take advantage of the Native fight for reconciliation. Couldn’t the parking company, for this one historic event, put aside its greed for profit for one day?

WestPark should give all of its excessive profit from the holy day of September 22 to a society that is working to help the survivors of residential schools.
