CNN has reported that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 1,457 people in Nepal.

It was centred fewer than 80 kilometres from the capital of Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, the Indian network NDTV has reported that at least 43 people have died in India from the earthquake.

Of those, 32 were in the state of Bihar, another eight were in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and three were in West Bengal.

BBC News shows footage of people using their hands to dig people out of the rubble.

The earthquake also caused avalanches in the Himalayas, including one that has reportedly buried part of the base camp at Mount Everest.

The New York Times has reported that parts of the historic centre of Kathmandu has been flattened, including the nine-storey Dharahara Tower. It was built in 1832.

Kathmandu's landmark Dharahara Tower collapsed in the earthquake.

The New York Times also reported that buildings "swayed in Tibet and Bangladesh" during the earthquake.

According to seismologists, the Indian plate meets the Eurasia plate underneath Nepal.
