Park board votes to give Queen Elizabeth Park a zipline, delays debate on skateboarding

Queen Elizabeth Park is getting a zipline.

The Vancouver park board made that decision last night (April 27) with NPA and Vision commissioners siding against the Greens.

For now, the zipline will be built as part of temporary additions to the property designed to commemorate the park’s 75th anniversary.

It will run 190 metres from a launch tower located west of the Bloedel Conservatory, over a quarry to the southwest side of the garden.

According to a report prepared by the city’s general manager for parks and recreation, the zipline will cost between $15 and $20 per ride, which could generate between $75,000 and $400,000.

Green commissioner Stuart McKinnon spoke against the development at last night’s meeting.

“It seems to be, once again, the Park Board trying to generate revenue, by putting amusements in the park,” he said.

Vision commissioner Catherine Evans said she had concerns but ultimately voted with the board’s four NPA commissioners.

In related news, the park board delayed two votes on skateboarding facilities in the Mount Pleasant area. Commissioners were scheduled to hear input from the public on the future of an existing facility at Ontario and West 16th streets as well as on a new facility proposed for Jonathan Rogers Park at Manitoba Street and West 7th Avenue. NPA board chair John Coupar deferred debate on the matter to a future date.

Awesome. So, if the park board is all about generating revenue, why stop at a zipline? Are parks supposed to make money - is that the intent now? And it's used to shut down opposition or conversation; "but it will generate revenue!"

What is wrong with this parks board ?!?! The quarry garden at QE park has long been a place of quiet solitude and peacefulness away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Now these idiots want to turn it into an amusement park with screaming yahoos zipping overhead ?!?! What's next ? Dirt bike races ?!

Is the city inviting Queen Elizabeth to take the inaugural zip? I think not. What a disgraceful inappropriate way to honor the park, the Queen and the Queen Mother.
