The B.C. government has announced how much it will contribute to earthquake relief efforts in Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the $300,000 donation will go to the Canadian Red Cross.

The money will go toward search and rescue operations, the distribution of food, and the delivery of blankets, hygiene kits, and sleeping mats, a news release says.

"We know, from our own emergency efforts here at home, that every day and every dollar counts. We're all in this together - with the same hope that we will be able to help save lives and provide the people of Nepal with the support they need to get through this disaster," Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton stated in the release.

The 196 B.C. Liquor Stores across the province are collecting Red Cross donations of $2 or $5 (or multiples thereof) until June 6.

"Our hearts go out to the people of Nepal as they cope with this devastating earthquake. Our sincere thanks to the Province of B.C. for its leadership and support. We also wish to thank the BC Liquor Distribution Branch and its customers donating through BC Liquor Stores. These contributions from people across B.C. will be vital to the emergency response and recovery operation," Kimberley Nemrava, B.C. and Yukon director for the Red Cross, said in the release.

The Canadian government previously announced $5 million in humanitarian assistance funding plus a plan to match donations to certain charities between April 25 and May 25.

More than 6,000 people were reportedly killed by the quake, which struck last weekend.
